Update on developments at the Gregson and the next steps

Our managing agents handed back the keys to the building on Friday 21st August. Since then we have been busy looking at what needs to be done so that we can re-open the building as soon as possible and welcome you back through the doors. We aim to reopen the doors by the 1st of October for some of our regular user groups and classes at first.

The closure due to Covid-19 has hit us hard but during the closure we have managed to bring in some charitable funding which will help pay for some of the essential work needed. The generosity of our local supporters is also helping us pay essential bills.

This is a new start for the Gregson Centre. We will be running the building directly using volunteers at first.  In the longer term, we know that we need to get the Gregson Centre back to where it was with the bar open and food being served, with any profit generated being reinvested in looking after and improving the building.

We can only make this work with your support. We need:

Hands on Help

To reach our October deadline we are looking for people to help with the work of getting the building open and freshened up! We need help with

  • A deep clean of the building
  • Plastering
  • Decorating inside and out
  • Building work and labouring
  • Electrical work
  • Carpentry and joinery
  • Plumbing
  • Upholsterers and people who can sew

And the important work of making tea, coffee, snacks and cakes for our volunteers to keep everyone going!

All activities will be Covid safe and in line with the necessary guidelines

Behind the Scenes

We are urgently looking for people to join the board and our sub-groups with skills and experience in HR, business planning, finance and fundraising, Health and Safety, and building skills/experience at this important time.

The Future of the Gregson

Dear Gregson Centre Supporter,

As you know the Gregson has been closed since 20th March because of the Government lock-down in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. Whilst the building has been closed our centre managers have been unable to pay their monthly management fee to the charity. We use this money every month to cover the charity’s expenses including the bank loan that we have secured against the building. We have been continuing to make the bank loan repayments throughout the lock-down and have been refused a payment holiday in spite of Government guidance to the banks. However, unless the Gregson opens its doors again very soon, the charity will be in deep financial trouble.

We have had some much-appreciated financial help from the City Council during this difficult period but this money will run out in the next few months. We are doing our level best to achieve grant funding and we have several applications pending but we cannot rely on receiving these grants and they are unlikely to cover our core costs, including the bank loan repayments that we have to make every month.

We cannot say at this moment in time what the intentions of our managing agents are in terms of them reopening the Gregson. It looks probable that the Charity itself will have to try running the Gregson directly at some point in the future and we cannot say at this moment what form the ‘new’ Gregson will take. For now, the most important thing is that the building is not lost to the bank because we cannot make our agreed loan repayments. So, we are turning to you, the local community to ask for your help in the coming months until we get back on our feet.

If you want to get in touch with us regarding the future of the Gregson please email our Secretary, Katherine Bevington k.bevington@gregson-community-association.org.uk

Gregson Lend-A-Hand

LEND-A-HAND Food Project

The Gregson Community Association are collecting food and giving it out to people who may need help in the areas of Bulk, Freehold, Ridge, Newton and Moorlands.

If you have food you can donate please drop it off at the Gregson Centre any Monday between 4pm and 6pm. Please use the side door on Williamson Road, and please respect social distancing and keep two metres apart when you drop food off.

If you are in need of food and want some delivered please get in touch via email to

or send a message via Facebook

Please also contact us if you want to get involved in food distribution or any other community support such as checking in on isolated people, picking up and delivering medicines, chatting on the telephone etc. You can do this via email or Facebook at the above addresses.

If you can't donate food or you can't get to the Gregson Centre please consider making a financial donation instead. What will we use the money for?  Sometimes people who need help ask us for specific items - for example nappies of a certain size.  Where the specific items have not been donated we can buy them and put them in a particular person's food parcel.

We also need funds for publicity as well.

Please don’t forget to complete our survey on Survey Monkey. This will support and inform our action going forward.

Thank You

Gregson Community Association Lend a Hand Survey

The Gregson Community Association Trustees are really keen to make sure we are supporting our communities during the crisis. Up until now, we have been dealing with a lot of issues that the ‘lockdown’ has presented including the temporary closure of the building. We have also been having conversations with local organisations to see how we can support efforts across the area. We are very keen to hear from everyone in the area to find out what we can help with and what we can offer.

Please complete this short survey. It will take two minutes.  This will help us plan local action and bring together volunteers.

Covid-19 : Gregson Centre closure

April 2020

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the GregsonCentre is currently closed.

We aim to reopen the Centre as soon as possible, but the date is out of our hands at present.
We are looking at what we can do to best support the local community at this time.

If you wish to contact us please email us using the details on the "Contact Us" page.

Covid-19 : Donations to the Gregson Community Association

Regular supporters of the Gregson Community Association have suggested that we put a "Donate" button on here so that those that wish can assist us financially during this difficult time.

Donations made here will go directly to the GCA and assist us with our financial commitments. Although the Gregson Centre is currently closed, we do still have bills to pay. This is having a huge impact on our meager financial reserves.

Please use the button below if you feel able to contribute.

We have been asked about the current financial details of the Gregson Community Association, HERE IS A OVERVIEW OF THE SITUATION

Alternatively, if you would like to make a bank transfer, please contact the treasurer

This is so I can keep track of who is donating what.

Thank you.
